Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Christian Romero. The Tottenham captain leaves the club after five seasons (156 appearances, 13 goals). The deal was worth around £34.2m (€40m), with the contract running until June 2031, with Spurs retaining 15% of any future resale.
Simeone has long wanted the player. Romero himself has repeatedly said that he “loves” La Liga and has long been drawn to Atletico. The move came despite the fact that his contract with Spurs was valid until 2029. But after the departure of Postecoglou and two unsuccessful seasons (17th place in the Premier League), the Argentine himself decided that it was time to go.
📊 For betting: strengthening Atletico’s defense ahead of the new La Liga season could reduce Simeone’s team’s total conceded goals at the start. For Tottenham, losing their captain and defensive leader is a risk to defensive stability.
