In a massive sports broadcasting move announced just hours before the kickoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between reigning champions Argentina and Spain, Telemundo has landed a major off-the-field victory. Riding an unprecedented wave of record-breaking World Cup viewership and digital engagement, the network has officially acquired the exclusive U.S. Spanish-language media rights to all UEFA men’s club competitions.

This multi-year agreement, negotiated with UC3, includes the crown jewel of European club football—the UEFA Champions League—for three full seasons beginning with the 2027/28 campaign. The historic deal also encompasses exclusive Spanish-language rights for the UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League, UEFA Super Cup, and UEFA Youth League. While exact financial details remain undisclosed, the acquisition represents a monumental shift in the American sports media ecosystem.

Executive Endorsements and Official Statements

Leadership from both NBCUniversal and UEFA voiced immense optimism regarding the partnership, emphasizing the expanding appetite for top-tier European football among Spanish-speaking audiences in North America.

“The UEFA Champions League is the pinnacle of club soccer tournaments, bringing together many of the world’s greatest teams and players in one of the most prestigious competitions in sports,” stated Cesar Conde, Chairman of NBCUniversal News Group. “We are delighted to partner with UC3 to bring the excitement, passion and drama of the UEFA men’s club competitions to Spanish-speaking fans across the United States.”

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin highlighted that the agreement reflects the explosive growth of European football’s fan base in the U.S. Hispanic market:

“UEFA club competitions represent the very highest level of club football, and their popularity continues to grow globally. This agreement with Telemundo reflects both the strength of our competitions and the passion of Spanish-speaking fans in the United States,” Čeferin stated. “We look forward to working together to deliver unforgettable moments and bringing the drama, excitement and excellence of European football to millions of viewers over the next cycle.”

Record-Breaking World Cup Viewership Fueling Growth

Telemundo’s high-profile acquisition comes as the network experiences historic ratings during its coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, proving the immense commercial viability of its sports broadcasting apparatus.

Through the World Cup semifinal stage, Telemundo and Peacock achieved an extraordinary Total Audience Delivery (TAD) average of 6.0 million viewers—representing a massive 147% increase compared to the same stage of the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

Semifinal Rating Highlights:

  • Combined Semifinal Audience: The two semifinal fixtures drew a total of 10.6 million TAD, more than doubling the 4.5 million viewers recorded during the 2022 semifinals.
  • Argentina vs. England (July 15): Argentina’s thrilling 2–1 victory over England attracted 11.4 million TAD, making it the most-watched World Cup semifinal in U.S. Spanish-language broadcasting history.
  • Spain vs. France: The second semifinal saw Spain defeat France in front of a staggering 9.8 million TAD.

Digital & Streaming Dominance:

Streaming viewership on Peacock and Telemundo digital platforms has served as the breakout story of the tournament. The digital Average Minute Audience (AMA) surged by 301% compared to 2022, skyrocketing from 718,000 to 2.9 million viewers.

Furthermore, cumulative viewing time across Telemundo, Universo, Peacock, and Telemundo streaming channels reached a staggering 73 billion minutes through July 16. This figure eclipses the combined 43.2 billion total minutes consumed across the entire 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments by a remarkable 69%.

A Major Shift in Spanish-Language Rights Ownership

Telemundo’s acquisition ends a long-standing broadcast run by rival network Univision (now TelevisaUnivision). Univision originally captured the U.S. Spanish-language UEFA package in February 2017 with a reported $35 million-per-year bid, taking over from Fox Sports prior to the 2018/19 season. Univision subsequently renewed the rights twice: first in March 2020 through 2024, and later in May 2023 via an agreement valued at an estimated $225 million through the 2026/27 season.

When Univision’s contract expires at the conclusion of the 2026/27 campaign, Telemundo will assume full exclusive control. This transition mirrors Telemundo’s historic 2011 acquisition of the FIFA World Cup Spanish-language rights from Univision, which officially took effect with the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Comprehensive Platform Coverage and Viewing Experience

Telemundo has confirmed that it will broadcast every single UEFA Champions League fixture across its multi-platform ecosystem. Match distribution, studio analysis, and localized programming will be available through:

  • Telemundo Network (Over-the-air broadcast channel)
  • Peacock (Subscription streaming service)
  • Universo (Cable network)
  • Telemundo Deportes Ahora (Dedicated FAST sports streaming channel)

In addition to live match broadcasts, Telemundo will produce custom studio shows, pre- and post-match analysis, and specialized digital content tailored specifically for U.S. Hispanic football supporters.

By adding UEFA’s suite of club competitions to an already robust portfolio that includes the English Premier League, German Bundesliga, select Liga MX clubs, and U.S. National Team fixtures, Telemundo solidly reinforces its dominant position in U.S. Spanish-language sports media. Additional production plans and scheduling details for the 2027/28 season will be announced closer to the tournament kickoff.
